Mounting Stamps with a Hot Knife

I thought I'd write a quick tutorial on how to cut your EZ-mount stamps with a hot knife.  I find it so much easier than cutting through the sticky EZ-mount with my rubber scissors.

Safety issues:  Work on a safe surface.  If you drop your hot knife, do not try to catch it!  Better to damage your surface or flooring than burn yourself.  The knife gets very hot which is why it glides through the ez mount like butter.

hot knife
safe cutting surface ( I use an old metal cookie sheet, upside down)
packing tape
EZ-mount or similar foam mount
stamps :)

Step 1:  Trim your rubber, unmounted stamps how you want them.

Step 2:  Prepare your work station.  I usually work on the floor, that way there's not far for it to fall!  LOL

I find a safe, well ventilated place to work, and put my cookie sheet down, bottom up.  See all that rust?  That's why it's been retired to be my hot knife cutting board!  LOL

You will need access to an electric outlet for your hot knife.  Place your hot knife stand and hot knife on your work surface until you find a place where it seems very stable.

You want to find a position where you don't have pulling from the cord.  After you find a good position, remove the hot knife and tape your stand down firmly.  This will make it so much safer to work with!

Step 3:  Lay out your stamps on your ez mount in the exact way you want them to fit.  I do this by using a spare sheet of ez mount to lay them out on side by side with the first sheet, so that I can transfer them directly across.  This is a photo of how I've laid mine out.  The empty spot is from where I've already transfered the first stamp over to the sticky side of my other sheet of EZ mount.

Step 4:  Transfer your stamps over to your EZ mount, sticky side up of course!  LOL

I usually work from the outside edges inward, fitting the outside stamps closely to the edge.

Step 5:  Cutting them out!
Plug in your hot knife and let it heat up for a few minutes.  Be careful not to touch the hot end!

Keep your blade directly upright to avoid under-cutting your stamps.  Gently push your hot knife into your ez-mount and glide it along the edge of your cut out stamp.  It will glide through easily.  There will be a bit of an odor from it.  Turn the sheet of EZ mount as needed, to keep a comfortable wrist angle for cutting.

Step 6:
After all of your stamps are cut out, gently lift the stamps from the sheet of EZ mount.

I've laid them out here on the EZ mount backing, foam up, just so that you can see the cuts.

It took me about 30 minutes to cut out all of these stamps (10 full size stamps plus 8 sentiments), not including a bit of time the night before, cropping the rubber in preparation.

This is the only way I cut out my stamps now!  I'm far less apt to undercut or have an oops with my hot knife, and my hands don't hurt when I'm done!  :)  Plus, it leaves me more time to play!

I just wanted to add a big thank you to my son for doing the photography while my hands were full!  :)

Thanks for stopping by!

Happy Sunday!

This week at Paper Sundaes, we have the perfect challenge for this time of year, Valentine's!  Our sponsor this week is Pink Cat Studio, and they have generously provided our DT with an image to play with.  I chose the adorable Lily Lovebug, and kept my card very clean and simple!

The back layer was embossed with a Spellbinders embossing plate, and then the middle layer was embossed with a Swiss Dots embossing plate.  The heart Lily is holding has some SU Dazzling Diamonds in the middle.

Stretching myself a bit

Thanks so much for stopping by!  If you follow my blog, you know that I really lean towards girly cards!  I coloured up this Edwin Wants A Hug from the 'You are So Special' Magnolia release about 2 weeks ago, but then couldn't figure out what to do with him!  I finally decided to make him into a Groom's card.  Is that weird?  I mean, brides get cards all the time, why not the groom?  LOL...  I think it could be used for other occasions, too, like a birthday.

I've used a free sentiment snagged from this week's Sentimental Sundays post.  If you like it, you'd better hurry, they change every Sunday!  I've paired them up with some papers from My Mind's Eye and distressed all of the layers.

Papertake Weekly:  sketch

I just loved the sketch challenge at Tickled Pink Challenge, but I ended up running around with my kids for the last 5 hours and just barely made the deadline!  I was so happy when my stamp arrived in the mail, isn't she adorable?

De-stressing with some distressing

This week at Paper Sundaes, the challenge is to add some distressing to your paper creation!  I've coloured up this beautiful 'Tilda in the Garden' which I stamped during a stamping playdate on the weekend from my dear friend Shana!  It is from the brand new 'You are so Special' Magnolia collection. The sentiment is also from the same collection.

I'm not sure what was going on with my mid-tone brown.  I never did figure out if it was my E34 or E35, but one of them was not blending right last night or this morning, not absorbing into the paper and just kind of sitting on top.  I may end up changing those two tips before they contaminate their friends!  You can see the reflection a bit here where the light was hitting it.  It's not nearly as bad from a side angle as you can see in the close-up.

Copic colours:
Skin:  E000, 00, 02, Chalk for blush
Dress, socks, roses:  R81, 83, 85
Hair, Shoes:  E30, 31, 34, 35, 37
Greenery:  G20, 21, 94

I've paired her up with some Magnolia papers that I bought and had never got around to using, from the Fairytale paper pack.  I've left her quite plain, in light of the migraine I've been fighting since this morning!

If you missed the news at Paper Sundaes, we have also left last week's Birthday celebration challenge open an extra two days, so you have until Monday night to pick your favourite of ANY of our first 51 challenges to have a chance to win one of 6 challenge prizes!  Winners will be announced Wednesday on Paper Sundaes.  So really, there is no reason for you to not enter your cards into our challenge!  LOL

Thanks so much for stopping by!  Tomorrow I am off to the dentist, so I expect it won't be any better of a day than today!  Hope you have something a lot more fun planned.

Simon Says Stamp Challenge:  Bingo (punches + flowers + gems)
Dutch Dare:  sketch

Totally Papercrafts:  Add a heart

Valentine's Wishes

If you're looking for my Paper Sundaes Blog Hop post, click here!  And if you're not, you should be!  We're giving away 11 fantastic prizes, 6 for the hop and 5 for our birthday challenge, and all you have to do is use any of our challenges for the last year!

I didn't have much time today but really needed some 'me' time to relax, since a vacation in the south is out of the question!  I really like the sketch at Card Positioning Systems this week, so I decided to make a really clean and simple Valentine's card using Rosalie With Roses and a sentiment from Amy R's All About Love sentiment set for the Early Valentine's challenge at All That Scraps Wednesdays Challenge  I've used some new Bo Bunny Valentine papers along with some of my PTI cardstock.

I've coloured Rosalie with my copics, using a bit of chalk for her blush, and a bit of French Gray Prismacolor pencils along the edge of her dress and socks.

Copic colours:
Skin:  E000, 00, 02
Hair:  E50, Y21, 26, 28
Dress, socks, ribbon: R27, 29, pencils
Roses:  R24, 27, 29, E8, YG25
Slip, shoes, etc:  C3, 5, 7

I am also entering this into a bunch of love and valentine challenges:  Bunny Zoe's challenge- love is in the air, One Crazy Stamper's Love challenge, Tuesday Throwdown- Valentine, Beary Sweet Challenge #18- Love, Pile it On- Anything Goes, Delightful Challenges- Celebrations (Valentine's), The Pixie Cottage- Love, Paper Playtime- Love, Wild Orchid- Sentimental, Totally Papercrafts- use a heart (on my papers and her buttons), Stamp Something- Cute Somethings

Thanks so much for stopping by!  I should have taken a new shot of our back deck... after getting some more snow yesterday and overnight, when I look out our back door, the top edge of the table is no longer visible above the snow on the deck!

Sweet roses from Tilda

If you are looking for my Paper Sundaes Birthday celebration and blog hop post, click here!  (If you're not looking for it, you should be!  We've got 11 amazing prizes!

This week while I've been hibernating at home avoiding our treacherous roads, I managed to get a bit of crafting time in and coloured up this Tilda from my stash.  I've been trying to figure out what her name is, but I notice that she has two different names, depending on where you look!  At All That Scraps and Simon Says Stamp, she is called Tilda with Bunch of Roses.  At Magnolia US, it's called Tilda Holding Bunch of Roses.  Whatever you call her, I call her cute!  :)

I've used the current sketch from Simon Says Stamp Challenge that ends right away!  They must be in my time zone, most of the continent is in tomorrow already.

I've used some yummy papers from Bo Bunny and my brand new Magnolia Doohickey Die that arrived today in one of four packages in my mailbox.  It was like Christmas in January!!  LOL

Copic colours:
Skin:  E000, 00, 02, Chalk for blush
Shirt, Roses:  R000, 01, 02
Pants:  BG000, 72, 75, 78
Hair, Shoes:  E30, 31, 34, 35, 37
Tag, twine:  E41, 43
Greenery:  YG13, 17, 93
Butterfly:  R81, 83, 85
Shadow:  W0, 1, 3, blender

And now to share with you a photo taken off our back deck:

Talk about a pristine back yard!  Normally we would have rabbit, cat and squirrel paths, but not this year!  That table is a normal height, no way are the small animals going to take that much snow on!  LOL

Now for my challenges:
Just Magnolia:  My Favourite Things (my copics and Tildas!)
Pile It On:  Anything Goes
Bunny Zoe's Crafts Challenge:  Love is in the Air
Tuesday Throwdown:  Valentine
Stamp Something:  Anything Goes

Thanks so much for stopping by!  And if you're braving terrible roads and weather like we've been, stay warm and drive safe!

Paper Sundaes First Birthday Celebration!

It's hard to believe that just over a year ago, Paper Sundaes was just a thought in my head!  My dear friend Shana was feeling a bit down, and I thought that starting a challenge blog was just what she needed!  She and I are very different though.  I have to think things through, take an idea, look at it from one angle, move it around, look at it from another angle... I'm definitely not the type to jump into things feet first!  So I kept my idea very quiet in my head, knowing that I'd better have my thoughts in order, because I knew that as soon as I mentioned it to Shana, she would be off and running!  LOL  Sure enough, within days of mentioning it to her, Paper Sundaes went from a thought to reality!

And now here we are at our first birthday celebration!  To celebrate, we want to share the joy with all of our crafty friends, so we have a BUNCH of prizes in store for you!  If you've just stumbled across our hop, you should head to Paper Sundaes to read up about the hop and our prizes and start your journey there!  If you are currently on our hop, you should be arriving here from Shana's blog.  At each blog you need to collect your word and comment on their Celebration post, and then at the end of the hop, post your sentence on Paper Sundaes!  Don't post it here!  It's a secret.  :)

My card today uses a Pure Innocence digi kindly provided to me by Heather Ellis.  I just love her little girls, they are all so adorable!  She also has several other lines, including a super cute line of snowmen that I am already planning on using next Christmas! I've used one of my favorite challenges, paper piecing.

I've paired her up with some cute My Mind's Eye papers called Fine and Dandy.  This card has a ton of layers, so it's really heavy!  Here's a few shots of the inside.

First the top:

And the bottom:

And now to finish off your hop, I suppose you'd like me to tell you what my secret word is to finish off your sentence?  Okay, okay, I've held you hostage long enough!  The last word of our secret sentence is 'girls'.

After you leave here, hop back to Paper Sundaes and leave your sentence on our blog hop post to get entered into the draw for all of those fantastic prizes!  Don't forget to enter the challenge this week as well, since we also have a bunch of prizes for that, too!  Thanks so much for making Paper Sundaes such a success!

But before you go, would you like a chance to win a little something right here?  I am going to give away this digi stamp to one of the commenters on this post.  If you follow me, just mention it in your comment and I will give you an extra entry.  The winner will be announced next Sunday right here on my blog.

And now to enter this into a few challenges:
The Pixie Cottage:  Your favourite colouring medium (Copics!)
Pile It On:  Anything Goes
Fairy Fun Fridays:  Happy Birthday
Stamp Something:  Anything Goes
Paper Play:  Cutie Patootie
Crop Stop:  Add some Stickles (on her cupcake)

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Snow, Snow, Go Away!

Oh we have been inundated with snow this year!  It's bordering on ridiculous!  In fact, I think we passed ridiculous a few weeks ago...  lol  (Check the bottom of this post for some links to photos if you want a good laugh!)  So when I saw the Magnolia challenge at All That Scraps I actually groaned!  The last thing I want to think about is what winter is like where we live, I'm trying to pretend that we live somewhere sunny and warm!  But I thought back to just how behind I was on my Christmas cards this past Christmas, and decided that this was just the challenge I needed.  I dug out my favorite Magnolia image from the Christmas release and some papers I bought but hadn't used, and got to work!

Here's a close-up:
Copic colours:
Skin- E000, 00, 02, chalk for blush
Hair:  E30. 31, 34, 35, 37
Jacket, mitts, hat:  YR000, 00, 02, 04
Pants & broom stick: E41, 42, 43, 44
snowman's hat: R30, 32, 35, 37
Straw broom: Y21, 28, YR23, 24
Boots, buttons, shading on snowman:  W0, 1, 3, 5, 7
Shadowing: BG0000, 000, 10

I need to retake the photos of the inside, so I will try to edit them into this post later.  I've been gaining lots of extra time not having to run my kids around while they've been home sick all week, but do actually need to do some running around to prep for the weekend.

I've kept this really simple so it's easy to mail.  I've used lots of Crystal Stickles all over the trim, snow and snowflake.

And now for your amusement, check out these photos (not taken by me!) from  our area:

Funny to look at :)  Not so funny to shovel LOL

This is a garden fountain?

This is EXACTLY what our roads look like!

Okay, stop laughing... No really, stop laughing!  It's not funny!

Fine then, laugh at us... you're so mean!  ;)

And of course, I can't make a card without entering it in a bunch of challenges, or you might think you're at the wrong blog...

All That Scraps Magnolia challenge has the dreaded 'Winter Where you Live' Challenge ending right away.  Just Magnolia is taking it easy on us this week, with an 'Anything Goes' Challenge.  7 Kids College Fund wants to see 'Hot or Cold'... I think I showed lots of cold!  LOL...  Over at All That Scraps Wednesday's Challenge the theme is Snowmen, as is Sparkle's Christmas Card Challenge #6.  I've used the current sketch at Stamptacular Sunday.  Over at Alice in Wonderland, the current challenge is 'Remembering Holiday Dreams', which building snowmen should count for!  The Crop Stop has challenged us to 'Add some Stickles'.  And last but not least, Let's Ink it Up also has 'Anything Goes' this week!

Now I am sure this will be my last post until Sunday as both of my kids have a big 3 day swim meet, but be sure to come back then because we are having a blog hop to celebrate Paper Sundaes first birthday, and let me tell you, the prizes are AMAZING!!  We have such amazing and generous sponsors, without question!

Another Tilda from the New Release!

Last night while I was up in the middle of the night with my sick daughter, I used my unexpected awake time to colour up this cute Tilda from the winter kit.  Tilda With Small Gift is from the You Are So Special Magnolia collection.  I wasn't thrilled with my colouring, but I guess that's what happens when you're colouring at 1 AM!  LOL

The papers are old ones from my stash by My Mind's Eye, Dreamy2 line.  The sentiment is another stamp from the Magnolia Winter kit.

And the prerequisite close-up:

Copic colours:
skin- E000, E00, E02, chalk blush
hair- E50, Y21, 26, 28
dress and socks- R30, 20, 32
shoes, lace, shadow- W0, 1, 3, 5
Gift, tag- BG10, 11, 13, E42

And now I've gone from one sick child to two, so it may be a long night!  Maybe I'll get another image or two coloured, lol... and then fall asleep in my cereal in the morning!

February Calendar

Here I can't believe it's already 2011, and now I'm making a calendar for February?  I'm not usually that on top of things!  I really wanted to participate in the calendar challenge right now at Anyone for Anya!  So here it is!

Here's a shot of the front:

Birthday Tilda

While I am anxiously awaiting the upcoming Magnolia release, I consoled myself by playing with this new Tilda from the recent Magnolia winter kit!  She is so adorable!  I have no idea what her name is, since we won't know that until the new release comes out!  I've paired her with some Echo Park papers from the summer.

I did some experimenting and playing while I was colouring her dress.  It will be interesting to look back at this in a few months and see if I still like it or not!  :)

Copic Colours:
Skin:  E000, 00, 02, 93
Hair, shoes:  E30, 31, 34, 35, 37
Dress:  RV10, 21, 23, 25, 29
Balloon:  BG0000, 000, 01, 05
Shadow:  W0, 1, 3, E40

I am loving all of these bright and sunny colours, can you tell?  We are having a lovely snow storm right now, which will be followed by some beautiful highs of -25.  Yes, that is MINUS!  And colder.  Plus windchill.  If only it weren't for almost blizzard-like driving conditions, I'd ask who was preparing their guest room for me, time to head south!  LOL

Found a Magnolia Sneak Peek!

In case anyone else is as obsessed as I am...

I have been keeping an eagle eye out for sneak peeks of the upcoming Magnolia 'You are so Special' release, and stumbled upon this cutie!  I can't wait!

Sad news... store closing

I meant to post this over Christmas but things were a bit hectic, to say the least!

My dear friend Jenny has decided to close her store, Paper Jewels :(  Right now she has all of her stamps marked down 40 to 60%.  This would be the perfect time to round out your collection of CC Designs, Bildmalarna, Spesch and Sweet Pea stamps!  She is offering flat rate shipping of $3.50 within Canada and the US.

So if you're interested in some amazing bargains, you'd better hurry!

Paper Jewels (

Is it too late for New Years?

As soon as I saw this beautiful Anya freebie over on The Greeting Farm's blog, I knew I had to use her to make a New Year's card.  I got her all coloured up two days ago when my friend Shana came over to play with our new Christmas toys, but just finally found time to finish the card tonight.  If you're interested in what I've been up to, I've been putting my scrap room back together!  In my house, I have taken over the living room!  I would just hate being stuck in the basement, it's just too cold here for that!  My feet would never warm up.  Unfortunately, that means that in order to put up our Christmas tree, I have to take my entire craft area apart.  Today while my hubby was at work, the tree came down!  Tonight I put him to work getting my table set back up, and my storage unit hauled up from the basement.  Now I just have to bring up everything else, and get it all organized.  Wonder if I'll get that done by next Christmas?  lol

Enough with the chatter, on to the card, right?  Here it is:

If you'd like to snag Happy New Year Anya for yourself, you'd better scoot, I'm not sure if they will be leaving her up or not!

Happy New Year!

The holiday season has flown by so fast, I can't believe the kids go back to school tomorrow!

Our challenge this week is 'Something New', which suits me perfectly since I was eager to play with my Christmas present from my hubby:  80 new copics!  Smart me, I keep a running list on the back of my colour chart of which ones I want to buy next!  :)  Our sponsor this week is Michelle's Scrapbooking & More!  For my card today I've used Bon Voyage Tilda, who I hadn't had a chance to play with before.  I've paired her up with some 'new to me' papers from October Afternoon's Thrift Shop line.

At the last moment I decided to do a touch up to her pant colour, what a mistake!  I should have left it alone... Live and learn!

Copic colours
Skin- E000, 00, 02, chalk blush
Hair- E30, 31, 34, 35, 37

I hope you will come play along with us this week!  Thanks for stopping by!
